CAL-04: Under Hawaiian Skies and The Great Observatories of Mauna Kea, GILBERT YANOW, NASA/Jet Propulsion Lab. Ret., Hilo Hawaii." August 3-5, 2011
The Summit of Mauna Kea on the Big Island of Hawaii is the world's premier site for ground-based astronomy. The advances in astronomy there that and been made and will be made over the coming years can be compared to the changes that occurred with the introduction of the telescope. The first two days of the course will be held at the offices of Gemini North, an 8.1 m Telescope. Day one of the course will give the attendees a background into some of the observatories key missions, technology and research results. The second a day will continue these talks and also a visit to the Offices and Computer Center of the Subaru 8.3 m Telescope. Day three of the course will be a visit to the op of Mauna Kea and the Gemini Telescope and other observatories. The extreme altitude (almost 14,000 feet) does restrict access to individuals in reasonably good health. Children under the age of 16 and pregnant women are not permitted to travel to the summit by observatory policy
