The "Chautauqua" has been around since the mid 1970's. The idea behind Chautauqua was to present a series of short courses for instructors who teach at two and four year institutions in order to give them some new information about topics they find of interest. The hope was that with this material they could extend their own lecture notes, give new examples to their courses, or perhaps give them a head start to move into new subject areas. For almost all of the years, the National Science Foundation has funded Chautauqua, and will continue to do so until the end of May 2008.

This year we are in interim funding, preparing new proposals. We are also trying some new procedures such as welcoming secondary teachers to our courses, and in one case. CA5, presenting a course with subject matter we feel is of importance not only to the educational community, but the overall community at large.
There are a series of Chautauqua Centers around the country, but anyone is welcome to enroll at a course at any Center. You can find links to other Centers at the bottom of the main page.
For this year our Chautauqua Program is in interim funding and therefore will be more limited than in 2007. In addition to the $100 Application Fee (50% discount if we get your application by 29 Feb. 2008 with fee), courses may have varying "course fees". We hope you will be understanding and we want to continue to make Chautauqua an interesting, valuable, and yet affordable experience for our community of educators and students.
