June 10, 2008: Engaging Learners - Getting Started with Active Learning. Presenter - Tamara Rosier, Assistant Director of Assessment, Pew FTLC. This session will focus on ideas and strategies that encourage students to become active learners. Specifically, we will discuss setting an environment for active learning, placing the onus of learning on students, facilitating students as they engage course material, and choosing learning strategies that will provide optimum learning for your students.
July 15, 2008: The POGIL Classroom – Engaging Students to Develop Learning Skills and Master Critical Concepts. Presenter – Edward Baum, GVSU Professor of Chemistry and Director, CESME. POGIL (Process-Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning) is based on cognitive learning theory and extensive evaluation showing that learning experience improves when students are actively engaged and working together to construct their own knowledge base. POGIL learning is an interactive process of careful thinking, discussing ideas, refining understanding, practicing skills, reflecting on progress, and assessing performance.
August 12, 2008: Teaching Physics More Effectively - Connecting Research to Practice. Presenter: Bradley Ambrose, GVSU Associate Professor of Physics. In this workshop, participants will be introduced to the growing field of physics education research (PER) and to the innovative materials that have been developed and tested. The workshop will focus on how PER is carried out, the types of questions that are being tackled, and how results inform ongoing efforts to improve student learning of physics.
Each workshop will be presented in a single-session format. The presenter will meet with no more than 24 participants for 4 hours of instruction plus 1 hour of discussion/evaluation. All workshops will be held from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM in the Learn Lab at Steelcase University, 44th Street, Grand Rapids. There is no fee for the workshop. Breakfast and lunch will be served at no charge. The three day program will earn 1.5 CEU credits, on request, from Grand Valley State University.
