How to Live Better and Save Money with High Cost Energy and Limited Water Resources--Diamond Bar Resource Fair Dr. Gilbert Yanow, NASA Jet Propulsion Lab., ret.(in cooperation Clean Air Now and the AQMD), at the AQMD Diamond Bar, Ca

Course fee: Special Low Cost Pricing See Below

This course is a departure from the standard Chautauqua format.  These topics of energy and water are considered to be so important by our Center that we have designed these few days for both the general public and the educational community.  The presentations will be general in nature to accommodate both audiences, but in the case of the educational community they will be given a resource CD, filled almost to capacity, with PowerPoint’s, references, graphics and other items that will allow an instructor to include the topics of energy and energy conservation in their own lecture notes.  Upon request, we will email you the directory of the CD so you can see its full contents.

This event now also includes a special teacher workshop for grades 7-12. See below.

There is now a wide spread realization of the energy problem this nation now faces, not just at the gas pump, but from the standpoint of our national economy and security.  In addition in Southern California, as well as other areas in this country, there is a growing problem of having enough of an available water supply. The aim of the three days will be to give a background on the history of world energy and water use, the history of renewable sources from the ancients to the modern solar cell; the things and technologies ones can now use to reduce their energy bill and the associated pollution in the home and in transportation; and ways to make better use of our perhaps most important resource, water.  This course is being presented in cooperation with various agencies and industry.  The presented and demonstrated aspects of the three days will be very practical in nature, giving a person information to make a decision about energy savings  and/or water conserving in their home along with associated costs and projected pay back times.

Clean Air Now will also conduct a special Clean Air Challenge workshop for teacher in the grades of 7-12. See below for the many special features of this event. If you are a teacher and wish to apply, use the application form you can access from the link below. Do not worry about any of the comments about fees. If you are accepted into this workshop it costs you nothing and you will eventually get a stipend. The application was designed for the normal Chautauqua course, so do not worry if some of the questions do not seem appropriate for this workshop. Just make sure in the "statement of interest area" you say you are applying for the Clean Air Challenge workshop. Your application will be sent to the workshop organizers and then they will contact you.

DVD, Teachers Companion, Laboratory Equipment, 100 Data Logs, 50 Case Study Booklets, a Workshop Folder, and upon satisfactory implementation of the materials, a stipend.

The Workshop materials will cover subjects such as,

                        Learning about pollutants,

                        How to do measurements

                        Learn about field studies

Learn about different fuels such as hydrogen

                        Fuels cell technology

Application of renewable  and new technologies.

Application of the equipment with your students.

For additional details on this workshop, see http://www.clean-air-challenge.com

Teachers will also be given an opportunity to visit the Resource Expo

1:00 PM – 4:00 PM

 Resource Expo

There will be explanations and demonstrations by people in the field who work with energy and water systems for the public.  They will show you how things work and what they cost.  What tax incentives are there for you to move toward alternative energy?  How long will it take for your investment to pay off?

There will be simple technology demonstrations such as

A small thermosiphon hot water system

            A solar oven

A solar powered wash basin fountain

Sunday 18 May 2008

9:30 AM – 11:00 AM, AQMD

Introduction To Our Transportation Future And Preserving Our Environment.

AQMD will show how they work to keep our air as clean as possible and the projects they have to provide new modes of powering our future transportation.  What options are there to fuel our cars of tomorrow, natural gas, ethanol, electricity, hydrogen??

11:30 AM – 3:00 PM

Transportation Expo

See the various research cars that AQMD  now has under development and study.  We will have representatives of the car manufactures of today who are producing hybrids and other more energy efficient vehicles.  See them, try them and see what are their costs.
